The Cookout: A guide to AI Ancestral Intelligence by Aymar Jèan Escoffery
"The Cookout: A Guide to AI (Ancestral Intelligence) is a comic workbook and guide for storytellers, community organizers, researchers, and other leaders. The book is based on my academic book, Reparative Media: Cultivating Stories and Platforms to Heal Our Culture (MIT Press, 2025). The comic book narrative is an Afrofuturist tale set in a corporate dystopia that helps readers understand how media and technology can harm, and the guide offers prompts for them to write in and brainstorm how to work collectively towards repair.
The rest of the book narrates a future we can create together: The Cookout as a Black and indigenous platform for reimagining supply chains for stories and knowledge. Each chapter reimagines an aspect of how corporations cultivate stories and knowledge. These chapters are instructive and interactive. I ask the questions we must answer to host a Cookout. I briefly share how I answered them and invite you to write in and do the same." — Aymar Jean "AJ" Escoffery

Caring for Books
Caring for Books
Books made by hand are generally going to be more resilient than books made by machine, but in either case: the nicer you are to them, the longer they'll last in the condition you bought them in.
Depending on your location, the moisture of that environment may cause slight curling in the board and papers. If so, the materials are adjusting to your environment, and if you left the journal under weight in that environment for 24-48 hours, that issue should resolve itself. This acclimation process is something many libraries conduct when getting new books for their shelves.
Did you scuff or mark your book cover? Don't put soap or water on it! Get a rubber cement pick up and gently rub the mark off of the area. You may not be able to get all of it, but, most of the time, it gets the job done!
